The beloved Book of Esther is the record of an orphaned girl among the Jewish captives in the Persian capital Susa who became the emperor’s queen. Esther, who had been raised by her cousin Mordecai, was beautiful, intelligent, and wise. Esther and Mordecai together faced the king’s decree, which was prompted by Haman, to destroy all the Jews in the kingdom.
